A preview of Rolls-Royce’s first electric car

We’ve heard it for years: “The future is electric.” Now the long-anticipated Rolls-Royce electric car has been unveiled.

The new Rolls-Royce Electric has been teased by the company on Twitter for the last week. Rolls-Royce released the full-scale test vehicle on Friday, and said it is the company’s first electric car in its 102-year history.

The official reveal will come during an event in London on Friday. The car will be officially christened the Rolls-Royce Autograph, but Rolls has not yet released the convertible top.

Since the 1920s, Rolls-Royce has been synonymous with luxury, exclusivity and performance. Its cars have been featured in many movies, most recently “Black Panther,” where actress Lupita Nyong’o’s character Nakia drove a Rolls-Royce Wraith.

Jeff Schoettler, president and CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said in a press release: “Rolls-Royce Motor Cars are a luxury brand making a quantum leap with the introduction of an all-new ultra-luxury electric car for exclusive automotive travel in a ‘space-age’ environment, with power and space for all the senses, and an ultra-magnificent finish with no compromises. It’s time to move from the street to the sky.”

Jeff Schoettler, president and CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said the company is now in a very different era than the 1920s.

The car has been designed by the French designer Jean-Marc Gagnon. “The output of electric motors, not to mention traditional combustion engines, have changed the world we live in, it has become extremely difficult to tell the difference between one from the other,” said Gagnon.

Many luxury brands have opened up electric versions of their product line, with General Motors’ Chevrolet debuting a plug-in Bolt EV during the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year.

“We are very happy to be the first luxury brand to launch a fully electric car that will complement our air-conditioned service, which for the last 100 years has fulfilled the needs of discerning customers around the world,” Schoettler said.

The model has been in the works for nearly two years, according to Rolls-Royce. It will use lightweight carbon fiber and ceramic interiors to create a “significant increase in interior capacity,” the company said in the release. The car will also use the world’s first ceramic sunroof.
